Grades 5–6 Program

Our Grades 5–6 program builds on earlier foundations while encouraging students to think critically, work independently, and deepen their understanding of core subjects: English, French as a Second Language, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies. Students take part in daily small group lessons that provide targeted support and opportunities for discussion. While parents do not attend these sessions, their support at home is essential to help students stay organized and to ensure homework is completed and submitted on time.

List of 5 items.

  • English

Students continue to develop their reading, writing, and oral communication skills with an emphasis on comprehension, structured writing, and confident verbal expression.
  • French as a Second Language

Focus on advancing reading, writing, and oral communication skills, allowing students to gain fluency and confidence in authentic contexts.
  • Mathematics

Emphasis is placed on mathematical reasoning, problem-solving, and applying concepts to advanced situational problems with real-world applications.
  • Science

Students move between theory and practice by proposing explanations or solutions to scientific and technological problems, making the most of tools, objects, and procedures, and communicating effectively in the languages of science and technology.
  • Social Studies

Students explore how people lived, worked, and built communities from 1745 through to the 1980s. They learn how families, cultures, and ways of life changed over time, and how different groups of people interacted and influenced one another.

They also look at how communities grew in different regions of Canada and learn about the experiences of Inuit and Mi’kmaq peoples. Students connect the past and present by listening to interviews and watching video recordings of First Nations people living today, which helps them better understand perspectives, traditions, and the ongoing impact of history.
This stage of learning prepares students to transition into the more complex academic demands of Grades 7–8, while reinforcing curiosity, independence, and responsibility.
