“I Suck at Math” – Helping Your Child Move Past “I Can’t.”

If you’re thinking about taking charge of your child’s education, one concern often comes up quickly. What if I’m not good at math? How can I support my child if I struggled with it myself?
For many parents, this feels like a real barrier. But it doesn’t have to be.

It’s very common for children to say “I can’t” when it comes to math. Over time, that feeling can turn into a belief. “I’m just not a math person.” But math isn’t about being a certain kind of person. It’s about building understanding step by step.

At Quebec Online School, students follow a structured curriculum and are taught by experienced educators. Parents are not expected to teach the material. Your role is to support your child by encouraging them to keep going, reminding them it’s okay not to understand right away, and helping them stay on track.

Alongside the curriculum, students are also learning how to approach challenges. How to try again. How to stick with something when it feels difficult. This is where confidence begins to grow.

As a parent, even a small shift can make a difference. Instead of asking, “Did you get it right?” try asking, “What did you try?”

Because in the end, success in math isn’t just about the answer. It’s about helping your child move from “I can’t” to “I’ll try.”

With best wishes for your child’s education,
