The Magic of Math

There are only a few things in life that everyone can agree are true, and math is one of them. That’s why it has always fascinated me. Most young children enjoy sorting patterns and colors, and for five- and six-year-olds, counting to 100 is a big achievement, even if they skip a few numbers. So where did things change? Why did math become the most disliked subject in high school, and why do so many students feel that only a few can succeed at it?

At its core, math is more than just numbers on a calculator. It’s about patterns, shapes, relationships, and the logic that helps us understand the world. When I was a teenager who loved music, I enjoyed seeing how fractions, Bach, and the band U2 all use rhythm, structure, and repeating patterns to create something logical and expressive.

Children often feel like they are failing at math when they can’t see how numbers relate to their own lives. Math turns into something to memorize instead of something to explore. That’s why, starting in the 2026-2027 school year, our youngest students will use a new math curriculum that is very visual and helps them understand, not just memorize.

We will also share materials and resources that we recommend for all families, not just those at our school. For example, you might like these weekly printables from Multiplicity Lab.

You might also enjoy these Shapes Puzzles from Vanmor, available on Amazon.

In the end, the magic of math is about remembering what we knew as children: math is something to play with, question, and create with. When students see math as a living language full of patterns and possibilities, not just a set of strict rules, they start to feel more confident and less afraid. Our goal is not just to teach math, but to help students reconnect with it through curiosity, creativity, and the quiet satisfaction of understanding the world.
